バヌアツではカヴァという飲み物が飲まれています。

お祝い事や、何か特別なことがあるときにも飲まれるようです。

女性は飲むことが禁止されている島もあるようですが、私が訪れたエフェテ島では女性も飲んでいました。

聞いたところによると、18歳未満だったと思うのですが、お酒のようにある一定の歳にならないと飲んではならないそうです。

Kava is drink that is drunk in Vanuatu.

People also drink it for special occasions.

In some island in Vanuatu, drinking kava is prohibited to women, but in Efete island which I visited this time, women also drink.

I heard that people has to be over certain age...I think it was over 18 to be able to drink kava, like alcohol in most of the countries.
とってもまずいのですが、飲んだあとはお酒を飲んだようにほろ酔い気分になります。

ほろ酔いといってもとても穏やかなものです。

ナカマルでは穏やかに会話を楽しむ人を多く見受けられます。

カヴァを一種の麻薬という人もいます。

For me the taste of kava is disgusting, but I liked the feeling which is like after drinking alcohol, relaxing and calm tipsy.

I saw many people enjoying relaxing conversations in nakamal

Some people said that kava is one of natural drugs.

ナカマルというのは色々なところに点在するカヴァバーで、日の入り頃にオープンし、

仕事終わりの人たちで賑わいます。

Nakamal is the name of kava bar which exist many place in the city I visited, Port Vila, and it opens around the time of sunset.

and those nakamals are crowded with people after work.
今回のバヌアツでの滞在中は3回飲む機会がありました。

最初は、友人と友人の会社の方が連れてってくれました。
I had opportunities of drinking kava 3 times during staying in Vanuatu this time.
My friend and her co-workers took me to nakamal for the first time.



これがナカマルカウンター。ここでカヴァを注文します。
約100mlで100バツ、約50mlで50バツだったと思います。
いつもご馳走してもらっていたので、価格を良く覚えていないのです。
ちなみにカヴァの濃さはナカマルによって違うらしいのですが、多くの人は1回カヴァバーに行くと、3から5杯程度飲むそうです。This is the nakamal counter.
We order kava here.
I think kava costs 100VUV for about 100ml, and 50VUV for about 50ml.
I heard the strenth of the kava is depending on the nakamal.
People around me always bought them for me, so I don't remember well...
And most people go to nakamal drink about 3 to 5 cups of kava for a visit.

カウンターの内側では、こんな風にカヴァが注がれていました。Kava was prepared like this in inside of the counter.

これを一気に飲み干します。
People drink it all at once.

 
口の中がカヴァ臭くなります。ちょっとしびれる感じもします。
なので、みなさん口の中を水でゆすいだり、唾を吐いたりしています。
After drinking kava, inside of mouth tastes like kava.
I felt little whacked in my mouth, too. 
So, People rinse their mouth with water and spit.
Well, I thought it doesn't work good enough just to rinse my mouth with water,

って、それだけぢゃ口の中のカヴァっぽさはおさまらないし、
きっとそれだけぢゃ楽しくないのでしょうか。。。
ちゃんと食べ物も売ってました♪
カヴァのカウンターの隣に、食べ物のカウンターを発見。
って、それが普通のナカマルのスタイルだそうですが。食べ物によって価格が違うようですが、ここでも友人がおもてなししてくれて、金額は全く分かりませんでしたが。
but also it is not good enough for feeling refreshed inside of the mouth just rinse with water after drinking kava...
I found food!Well that is just normal style of nakamal...There is a food counter next to kava bar counter.
All the food there have different price, but again my friend bought them for me and I don't know the price...

ここのナカマルでは、日が暮れてくると、赤い照明を灯していました。
というのも、通常の照明だと明るすぎて、カヴァによるリラックス状態には良くないとのこと。
ナカマルというのは私の解釈ではリラックスする場所です。
日本の居酒屋のように騒いだり、声を張って会話する人たちはいませんでした。
I heard that normal light is too bright for relaxing mood with kava.
According to my interpretation, nakamal is place to be relaxed.
They turned on red colored lights when it gets dark in this nakamal.
I didn't find anybody who are clamoring or talking loudly.

これが私の二度目のカヴァ体験。
風邪気味だったけど、薬を飲むようにカヴァが風邪をやわらげてくれるのではないかと思って飲んだけど、
かえってカヴァが回って、ちょっと辛かったです(笑)
この日は、友人のオフィスにて。
彼女のボスの送別のためとのこと。
ペットボトルにカヴァを入れるんですね！
My second experience of kava was at my friend's work place.
I had a slight cold, but I thought kava may work as medicine and took it,
but kava worked stronger than usual(I guess) and I felt bit sick...
People had kava for farewell of her boss.
By the way, people put kava in plastic bottles!

同じ日に、オフィスの建物の裏でも人々がカヴァを飲んでいました。
私もちょっとだけ混ぜてもらいました！
On the same day, other people were having kava in behind of the building.
And I joined them a bit.

偉い方が見えてたそうなので、写真を撮ってもらっちゃいました！
There were quite important people in Vanuatu and I asked to take picture with me!

最後の一回は泊まっていた宿のマネージャーさんが連れてってくれました。
そこに友人も加わって！
The manager of the hostel I was staying took me to a nakamal for the last time.
And my friend joined it.

ここのナカマルは赤い照明ではなく、ちょっと薄暗いものでした。
This nakamaru didn't have red lights, but had a little dim lighting.

とここまで来てせっかくなので、お土産にカヴァをと思っていたら、街中にありました。
カヴァストア。
スーパーで売っているパウダーカヴァでなく、インスタントカヴァ、その他バラエティーにとんだカヴァ商品が売ってました。
が、カヴァを持って旅行するのは危険なので、日本に送りました。
日本に送るのも没収が怖かったので、あまり購入しませんでした。。。
After tried kava for 3 times, I thought of buying kava,
I found a store in the city.
We can buy the kava powder in the super market, but here they sell instant kava and other things relating to kava.
But it is not safe to travel with kava,
and I was going to ship to Japan with other stuff and afraid of take them away in Japan, so didn't buy much of it...

こうしてカヴァを経験して思ったこと。
味がここまで悪くなければ、きっともっと世界に広まっただろうって。
After experienced kava and I thought,
if kava doesn't taste this disgusting, kava would've been drunk in more countries in the world...

theatre in vanuatu

バヌアツで劇場に行く機会がありました。I had a chance to go to a theatre in Vanuatu.

初めてカヴァを飲んで宿に帰ると、
たまたま宿のみんなで劇場に行くということだったのです。
宿のマネージャーが「一緒に来る?」と聞いてくれ、一緒に行かせてもらいました！
After I got back to the hostel from my first time of Kava experience,
some people staying at the same place going to the theatre.
And the manager of the hostel asked me “would you like to join? us”
So I answered “why not? Thank you!” and joined them!


公演内容はおろか、何も知らないまま行きました。
到着してパンフレットをもらう。

公演のタイトルでしょう。
説明はもちろんバヌアツ語。
読めません。
Of course I didn't know what they are playing or anything.
After arriving the place I've got a phanphlet.
“Laef I Swit”
I guess it is the title of the play.
All the writing are in Vanuatu.
I can't read...

劇場のチケット売り場は外にありました。
The ticket office is at the outside of the theatre.

我々が到着したのはスタートの30分くらい前だったと思います。
ぞくぞくと人が入っていました。
I think we arrived at the theatre about 30 mins before the play started.
There were many people coming in.

公演がスタートする頃には劇場は満員
現地の人が半分、西欧人が半分といった感じでした。
About the time of beginning of the play, there were full of people in the theatre.
I would say half of them are people living in pacific islands, and the almost all of others are Western people.

さて。スタート。

と、まずは、南アフリカからの特別ゲストによる公演。

メインではないため、10分程度の短いものでした。

これは英語だったのでだいたい理解できました。内容アパルトヘイト時代のものと理解しました。

The play started.
This play was played by the special guest from Republic of South Africa.
But this wasn't main play and they played only about only 10 mins.
I could understand most of it because it was in English.
I understood they played about the time of apartheit.

歌あり、コントあり、充実した内容でした。
が、もちろん言葉は分かりませんでした。
雰囲気で感じ取る感じでした(笑)
だいたい一時間半くらいのもので、途中15分程度の休憩がありました。
The played, sang, and sketched short comedies, and I enjoyed it.
But I couldn't understand their words at all.
I could feel the mood of what they were playing.
Duration was about 1 and half hours and about 15mins break in the middle.

shipping from vanuatu

バヌアツから日本に荷物を送ってみた。
オーストラリアは冬。ここは常夏。
オーストラリアで履いていたアグブーツが邪魔で邪魔で。。。
価格をまず調べてみる。
日本はZONE3とのこと。
I've sent some stuffs to Japan.
Now in Australia is winter time and here is everlasting summer.
I didn't need my UGG boots and didn't want to take it everywhere.
So I checked the price of shipping.
Sending to Japan is ZONE3.

ダンボールは購入できるが高い。
高いなぁって呟いたら、担当の人がスーパーでもらえると教えてくれた。
早速スーパーに行ってダンボールをもらった。
I could buy boxes at the post office but expensive.
I murmured that “boxes are so expensive” and the person in charge taught me that we can get boxes from supermarket for free.
So, I went to the nearest supermarket and got one.

ダンボールに荷物を詰め、約2.5kgだった。
ブーツ以外にも旅に不要なものを詰めてみた。
2800バツ
I put not only the boots but also things that I don't need for traveling.
The box weigh 2.5kg.
2,800vatu for 2.5kg.

記入用紙に必要事項を書き込み、支払いを済ますと、
担当の人が梱包を完了させてくれた。
親切！
テープを持参してなかったので、助かった。
After filling the documents and paying,
she finished packing the box.
So nice!
I didn't have tapes to pack, so if she didn't I had to go back to the supermarket to buy it...

日本に届くのはいつになるやら。
まぁしばらくまだ帰国はしないので急ぎはしないけれど。
I wonder when it will arrive to Japan.
I won't be back to Japan soon, so I'm not hurry though.

6月23日から25日の2泊滞在。
I stayed from 23^rd June to 25^th June 2014.


バヌアツに到着してすぐに泊まった宿。
バヌアツのことを何も知らないまま、インターネットで予約。
評価が良かったから選んだが、ポートヴィラの街から離れていて、立地はあまりよくなかった。
相部屋にタオル貸し出しは付いていない。(聞くのを忘れたので恐らくではあるが。)
空港からのタクシー代が高く付く(3000バツ)ので、
1人旅で車を借りないのであれば、一泊目でここに滞在はあまりオススメできない。
周りに何もない。
街まではバスで150バツだが、その移動を考えるのであれば、街中に滞在が良いと思う。
オーナー兼マネージャーさんと思われる方は素朴ですごく親切な方だった。
This is the motel I stayed right after arriving to Vanuatu.
I didn't know anything about Vanuatu and booked this place through internet.
I chose this place because the rating wasn't bad for the price.
But location isn't good at all because far from the city center.
No towel included to the dormitory I think...didn't ask though.
I don't recommend this place for those people travelling alone and not renting a car for the first day in Vanuatu 
because it is far from the airport and taxi cost a lot(3000vatu).
There is only a small store around this place.
The bus to the city costs 150vatu, but if think of going to the city everyday and time for going to the city, it is better to stay in the city.
I think the manager is the owner, he is really nice and kind.

メイン通りというか、バス通りから細道を抜けると宿がある。
街からこの宿を目指す場合は左側にサインが見える。
このサインの裏の細道を抜けると宿がある。
There is the motel after going through this narrow street beside the main street...the bus street.
If coming from the city, you can see the sign in the left side.
Behind the sign there is the narrow street to the motel.

細道を背後にバス通りを見るとこう。
From the narrow street towards the bus street.

宿にはプールがある。
が、あまり暑くなかったので入ることはなかった。
There is a swimming pool in the motel.
But I didn't go in because it wasn't that hot.

メインのオフィスドアのサイン受付、待合室。
この待合室が団欒場所にもなっていそうであった。
This is the main office and there is a sign on the door.
This is for the reception and the waiting room.
I think people can hang out here, too.

私の泊まった相部屋には2段ベッドが3台。
相部屋の中に簡易キッチンとトイレシャワーが完備されている。
風通りもよく居心地は悪くなかった。
が、海が近いせいか、特に静まり返った夜は波の音が気になった。
砂浜ではなく、岩の海だからだと思う。
I stayed at the dormitory room and there are 3 bunk beds.
There are a small kitchen, a toilet and a shower inside of the room.
Good ventilation and comfortable to stay.
But the noise of the waves was bad when it is quite around here.
Because they have a rocky beach not a sandy beach close by.

部屋を出るとすぐに海が見える。
海がすぐそばというのもこの宿のセールスポイントなよう。
Outside of the room, we can see the ocean.
One of their sale's points is that they have ocean view.
