culture of drinking kava

Kava is drink that is drunk in Vanuatu.
People also drink it for special occasions.
In some island in Vanuatu, drinking kava is prohibited to women, but in Efete island which I visited this time, women also drink.
I heard that people has to be over certain age...I think it was over 18 to be able to drink kava, like alcohol in most of the countries.
For me the taste of kava is disgusting, but I liked the feeling which is like after drinking alcohol, relaxing and calm tipsy.
I saw many people enjoying relaxing conversations in nakamal
Some people said that kava is one of natural drugs.

Nakamal is the name of kava bar which exist many place in the city I visited, Port Vila, and it opens around the time of sunset.
and those nakamals are crowded with people after work.

I had opportunities of drinking kava 3 times during staying in Vanuatu this time.
My friend and her co-workers took me to nakamal for the first time.

This is the nakamal counter.
We order kava here.
I think kava costs 100VUV for about 100ml, and 50VUV for about 50ml.
I heard the strenth of the kava is depending on the nakamal.
People around me always bought them for me, so I don't remember well...
And most people go to nakamal drink about 3 to 5 cups of kava for a visit.

Kava was prepared like this in inside of the counter.

People drink it all at once.

After drinking kava, inside of mouth tastes like kava.
I felt little whacked in my mouth, too.
So, People rinse their mouth with water and spit.
Well, I thought it doesn't work good enough just to rinse my mouth with water,

but also it is not good enough for feeling refreshed inside of the mouth just rinse with water after drinking kava...
I found food!Well that is just normal style of nakamal...There is a food counter next to kava bar counter.
All the food there have different price, but again my friend bought them for me and I don't know the price...

I heard that normal light is too bright for relaxing mood with kava.
According to my interpretation, nakamal is place to be relaxed.
They turned on red colored lights when it gets dark in this nakamal.
I didn't find anybody who are clamoring or talking loudly.

My second experience of kava was at my friend's work place.
I had a slight cold, but I thought kava may work as medicine and took it,
but kava worked stronger than usual(I guess) and I felt bit sick...
People had kava for farewell of her boss.
By the way, people put kava in plastic bottles!

On the same day, other people were having kava in behind of the building.
And I joined them a bit.

There were quite important people in Vanuatu and I asked to take picture with me!

The manager of the hostel I was staying took me to a nakamal for the last time.
And my friend joined it.

This nakamaru didn't have red lights, but had a little dim lighting.

After tried kava for 3 times, I thought of buying kava,
I found a store in the city.
We can buy the kava powder in the super market, but here they sell instant kava and other things relating to kava.
But it is not safe to travel with kava,
and I was going to ship to Japan with other stuff and afraid of take them away in Japan, so didn't buy much of it...

After experienced kava and I thought,
if kava doesn't taste this disgusting, kava would've been drunk in more countries in the world...

theatre in vanuatu

I had a chance to go to a theatre in Vanuatu.

After I got back to the hostel from my first time of Kava experience,
some people staying at the same place going to the theatre.
And the manager of the hostel asked me “would you like to join? us”
So I answered “why not? Thank you!” and joined them!

Laef i Swit
Of course I didn't know what they are playing or anything.
After arriving the place I've got a phanphlet.
“Laef I Swit”
I guess it is the title of the play.
All the writing are in Vanuatu.
I can't read...

The ticket office is at the outside of the theatre.

I think we arrived at the theatre about 30 mins before the play started.

There were many people coming in.

About the time of beginning of the play, there were full of people in the theatre.
I would say half of them are people living in pacific islands, and the almost all of others are Western people.

The play started.
This play was played by the special guest from Republic of South Africa.
But this wasn't main play and they played only about only 10 mins.
I could understand most of it because it was in English.
I understood they played about the time of apartheit.

The played, sang, and sketched short comedies, and I enjoyed it.
But I couldn't understand their words at all.
I could feel the mood of what they were playing.
Duration was about 1 and half hours and about 15mins break in the middle.

shipping from vanuatu

I've sent some stuffs to Japan.
Now in Australia is winter time and here is everlasting summer.
I didn't need my UGG boots and didn't want to take it everywhere.
So I checked the price of shipping.
Sending to Japan is ZONE3.

I could buy boxes at the post office but expensive.
I murmured that “boxes are so expensive” and the person in charge taught me that we can get boxes from supermarket for free.
So, I went to the nearest supermarket and got one.

I put not only the boots but also things that I don't need for traveling.
The box weigh 2.5kg.
2,800vatu for 2.5kg.

After filling the documents and paying,
she finished packing the box.
So nice!
I didn't have tapes to pack, so if she didn't I had to go back to the supermarket to buy it...

I wonder when it will arrive to Japan.
I won't be back to Japan soon, so I'm not hurry though.

blue pango in vanuatu

address :po box 4033, Port Vila, Vanuatu
phone :77 50085, 255285
URL :http://www.bluepango.com/
dormitory price : 1500vatu/night(about $16US)
breakfast : not included
internet : free wifi
towel : ?(didn't ask about it but guess not for free)

I stayed from 23rd June to 25th June 2014.

This is the motel I stayed right after arriving to Vanuatu.
I didn't know anything about Vanuatu and booked this place through internet.
I chose this place because the rating wasn't bad for the price.
But location isn't good at all because far from the city center.
No towel included to the dormitory I think...didn't ask though.
I don't recommend this place for those people travelling alone and not renting a car for the first day in Vanuatu
because it is far from the airport and taxi cost a lot(3000vatu).
There is only a small store around this place.
The bus to the city costs 150vatu, but if think of going to the city everyday and time for going to the city, it is better to stay in the city.
I think the manager is the owner, he is really nice and kind.

There is the motel after going through this narrow street beside the main street...the bus street.
If coming from the city, you can see the sign in the left side.
Behind the sign there is the narrow street to the motel.

From the narrow street towards the bus street.

There is a swimming pool in the motel.
But I didn't go in because it wasn't that hot.

This is the main office and there is a sign on the door.
This is for the reception and the waiting room.
I think people can hang out here, too.

I stayed at the dormitory room and there are 3 bunk beds.
There are a small kitchen, a toilet and a shower inside of the room.
Good ventilation and comfortable to stay.
But the noise of the waves was bad when it is quite around here.
Because they have a rocky beach not a sandy beach close by.

Outside of the room, we can see the ocean.
One of their sale's points is that they have ocean view.

Bought the flight ticket to Japan!

I bought the flight ticket for going back to Japan today.
I will be arriving in Haneda airport after noon on 2nd January 2015.
My last distination during my travel is Bankok, Thailand.
I will be in somewhere in Thailand in the end of this year.

It's been more than a year since I left Japan, more than a half year since I arrived to Australia.
It's been more than 2 month since I arrived to Sydney where I live now.
I'm thinking of leaving here in middle or end of June though.

But I haven't bought the ticket to leave Australia or the day to leave Australia...
Also I even haven't decided the itenerary after leaving Australia.
Only thing I already decided to do yoga at least one month in India.
I want to be arriving to India in August though.

I still stay in Sydney a while to save bit more money♪

new year's greeting!

It's been 2014 already.
And it almost has been 8 months since I left Japan...
A bit late to greet like this, but "A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"

Wow, a few friends sent "new year's card" to me even though they knew that I'm away from Japan!
I realized that I'm so lucky even though I'm not in Japan but those peope(maybe at least) thought about me.

I saw fireworks in Perth in the beginning of the year of 2014.
And also saw sunrise from the train way back to home in the morning...

The new year's resolution from 2013 is "do anything hard".
I quit the job and started travelling and I fulfilled what I wanted to do.
It is hard to say that I achieved 100% because my resolution is an abstract one.
I've had many good meetings since I started travelling this time.
Then sometimes those people I met tought me where to go, and I experienced things and went places more than I expected.
Although my budged of the trip exceeded! oops!
I can feel bad experiences were also valuable because those improved myself internally.

I travelled so much until being tired travelling, and now is the time for rest and save money.
I've already pooled money of target amount.
Although I haven't going out or partying much since I came to Australia, I enjoy moment now.
Not a lot though, I made some friends here in Perth area.
And also I can feel my relationship right now is sooo good(!?)
I feel that the reason I can feel like that is because of the people around me and the people I've met.
I can't stop thinking that I'm supported by so many people.
Thank you.

To tell the truth, I can't imagine how the year of 2014 will be or what I will do during this year at all.
Only things that I can think of is going to Bali around end of June, then head to India via Malysia and learn yoga about 1 month in India.
Other than that, nothing is planned...of course it is not clear time to go back to Japan.
When I feel like, I will...
But latest will be this time next year...
I really want to go back to Japan before I turn 30-year-old(!?)

The year of 2014 is the year which overrepresent most of my last age of 20's.
I really think I better find my partner, it is about time to.
So, my resolution for this year is "fiding my partner".
Yes,I'm serious ☆
Maybe I will meet the person in the future, maybe I've already met the person...
I believe that it will be cleared at the moment when I feel that I want to be his pertner.

Also I found what I want to learn after going back to Japan, so I declare here!o,
・Spanish
・Psychology(and coaching)
I started to think that I want to support people rather than leading people...and psychology will help that even the level of self-study.
And about Spanish is from the desire to communicate more smoothly with those people I made friends with during travelling.

I will keep going on my way this year again!
Best regards m(-_-)m
